Like in the desert is certainly unique, and has its challenges.  Until it was figured out how to provide an adequate water supply for the population as well as air conditioning, Las Vegas was considered almost unlivable.  Without an adequate water supply for the amount of people who live here, you’re continually taking your life into your hands by potentially not having access to one of the natural resources that is completely necessary to keep you alive.  This is why the desert looks like it does, with only species that have adapted to the low water levels being able to thrive in the heat.  For many years, Las Vegas was simply a place that you passed through on your way to more hospitable climates.  Once the water supply and air conditioning issues were solved, Las Vegas’ population grew significantly.  This allow people begin to do things that were once considered unthinkable.  They began to waste water in the desert.  Many people began to install decorative plants like grass lawns around their homes simply because they could.  Because the water supplies were so large, it was assumed that there was enough to waste.  The problem happened when the population got so large that it began the tax the amount of water that was held in reserve, and a few years of drought conditions then drop water supplies past the critically low levels that must be maintained.  This means that even though there were significant amounts of water in the reserves, it still might not be enough to maintain the quality of life of the population if drought situations continue.  This is why the water authority began to issue mandatory conservation programs that would ultimately save water for the population.  One of the main offenders with regards to water conservation efforts is grass lawns that were installed during the time when people believed that there was enough water to waste.  We must rethink this mistake.

The new way of thinking in the desert is to have the same kinds of luxury ground covering without wasting water to do it.  If people have not switch over to desert landscaping types of ground covering, then they are switching over to artificial turf in order to make sure that water is not wasted within their home.  Artificial turf is a plastic product that looks and feels exactly like regular growing grass, only it is not going to grow and need any maintenance over time.  It is also not going to need to be watered in order to maintain its look and feel, which makes it a perfect installation for those that want to conserve water and still have a very comfortable living environment surrounding their home.  Whether you choose desert landscaping or artificial turf, being a good member of society by not wasting water is important in the desert.  We all must understand that nobody is above the rules, and we almost participate in the conservation programs in order to succeed.
