Desert Landscaping Includes Artificial Grass

“Desert landscaping” is a style of landscaping that is mainly utilized in desert communities in an attempt to utilize law to no water plants and elements in a way that is beautiful and will also compliment the surrounding environment.  The complete landscaping of an area with elements that use no water whatsoever is called “xeriscaping,” and it may differ slightly than desert landscaping by using more concrete and elements that are not natural to the desert.  While there are not necessarily rules regarding these types of landscaping, and the one really constant idea is to use things that are not traditional landscape plants like grasses and shrubs or trees, there are also certain things that do not fit neatly into either definition.  Of of these things is artificial turf.

Putting a synthetic grass down as a ground covering is going to be rejected by desert landscaping purists as not being something that would be found in the desert, and therefor not part of a desert landscaping palate.  This might be the case, and as such it would fit more into “xeriscaping” simply because it is not using water to stay looking good, but the real point to consider is not if it fits into a definition but if it pleases the person and if it makes functional sense.  Simulating grass with plastic may conserve water, but it does not look natural to the desert.  You are not going to feel as though you are in a beautiful section of the American southwest if you are standing on artificial turf, but the desert itself is not as hospitable to daily life as artificial turf can be.  Lets face it, desert landscaping might be nice to look at but it is not the ideal ground covering for children to play on or pets to lounge on.  Crushed rock is not pleasant underfoot, and desert dirt is not going to make the best place for a table and chairs.  With daily life in mind, it is far better to think in terms of the best surface for the life that you want to lead.

For daily activities in an area like Las Vegas, where the weather allows for people to spend a large amount of time in their back yards, artificial turf is an ideal ground covering.  When professionally installed, it is going to be soft and not slip underfoot, the same way that real grass is.  It will make the ideal ground covering for most kinds of traffic, and is best paired with solid surfaces like concrete or pavers as the points where you might put a table and chairs, because the one drawback is that the legs of these types of things can damage the surfaces.  It might not be the perfect version of desert landscaping, but when combined with other water smart types of elements and surfaces it can create a space that is not only good looking but is also completely functional for your daily life.  Contact us today to find out more.
