Does Dog Urine Ruin Artificial Grass?

Let’s be honest: dog ownership seems to revolve around pottying. When considering artificial grass to solve the problem of landscaping in the Las Vegas desert, you have to wonder if the synthetic stuff can handle pet waste as easily as a natural grass lawn.

The short answer — dog urine does not ruin artificial grass. Not the high-quality turf that you can find today. Try as your Chihuahua might, he cannot damage or stain an artificial grass yard when he goes number one… or two.

Artificial grass can be installed with a perforated backing that makes drainage fast and automatic. The grass itself resists damage from urine as well as rain, sun, and everything else life brings. And to keep our outdoor spaces smelling fresh, a mineral called zeolite can be added to the turf at installation for lasting protection.

Controlling Urine Stains and Waste Odors with Artificial Grass

Synthetic turf from Desert Greenscapes handles pet waste on its own for the most part, and it’s very simple to take care of the rest.

After your dog urinates, the liquid drains through the holes in the backing. Solid waste remains but can be easily picked up and discarded appropriately.

For extra odor protection, we add zeolite to our turf solutions for dog owners. This advanced material absorbs urine and stops foul odors from building up.  You will still want to sanitize the surface, but this does not need to be an everyday chore — only an occasional cleaning, as needed.

Artificial Grass: The Best Solution for Pets in Las Vegas

It’s also important to note that dog urine can damage real grass. In the Nevada heat, a dry lawn can easily be killed by the acidity of urine. On top of the fact that grass maintenance requires too much water and creates a hassle in our climate, it’s even harder to maintain when you have pet waste damaging the live grass.

Dogs can be trained to potty on cement or stone, of course, but artificial grass has numerous advantages compared to those surfaces. Your dog would much rather go on synthetic grass, for one. And it’s much harder to control odors in those locations compared to the simple cleaning of artificial grass.

The bottom line: you and your dog will both prefer artificial grass compared to all the other options. And pet waste will not ruin the grass — synthetic turf can last for decades.
