Generational Differences In Landscaping

Were you aware that there a generational differences in landscaping?  This may come as a shock to many people as the thought of the landscape does not seem like something that would have many variations and therefore can change significantly between young people and old people.  Unfortunately, this becomes very apparent with regards to selling your home if you are an older person who is considering downsizing or put in your home when the market for any other reason.  Landscaping the way we did it 20 years ago is now considered to be both outdated and wasteful in Las Vegas, and less you plan on discounting the price of the house to reflect that the next buyers will need to spend money to redo the landscaping, you may have a surprise coming to you with regards to the way landscaping changes from generation to generation.  In Las Vegas this is mainly due to a shift in the way that younger people view conservation.  Because water is a precious natural resource in Las Vegas that has a very limited supply, and because our drought conditions seem to be growing worse every year, we find that the younger generation to be embracing conservation far more than the older generation did.  Older people tend to view their landscaping as something of a luxury item, where if you can afford to pay the water bills then having lush green grass and living plants means that you are better off than those who cannot afford these types of luxurious.  Younger generation does not view this as being luxurious, and instead use it as being wasteful even know they can afford the bills just as much as the older generation can.

Younger buyers are looking for artificial turf instead of real grass, and water smart landscaping instead of plants.  This solves two issues that seem to have changed between the generations the first being that water conservation is considered the honorable and water wasting to be wasteful, and the younger people no longer view the care and maintenance of their lawn the same way that older people do.  The previous generation lookup on an immaculate landscape as being the way that they show pride in homeownership.  Today, the younger generation views this as being a waste of their time due to the fact that you would need to spend your free time working on that lawn to keep it looking good.  The alternative would be that you would need to spend your money paying someone to do the lawn maintenance for you, which is also viewed as being something that is not of interest to younger homebuyers.  They view the technological improvements they have made synthetic lawns look and feel just like real grass lawns as improvement over the actual living plant that they are simulating.  This means that if you are going to make your house appealing to the majority of homebuyers for sale, you are going to need time to leave rethink your landscaping choices of the past.
