Installing Backyard Putting Greens

A backyard putting green is essentially a smoothed and shaped piece of ground in your backyard that is covered in either real grass or artificial turf, simulating the look and feel of a natural putting green. Many golfers look out into their back yards and see unused space that could easily allow them room to practice, and to improve their short game without the inconvenience of going to the local practice area on the course. While there is nothing wrong with that, most realize that if provided with the extra convenience and periods of time throughout the day, they would practice far more if they had a putting green in their back yard. For this reason, Google searches for “backyard putting green” or “DIY putting green” are quite popular. For this article we are going to instruct you on how to build your own backyard putting green, and also advise against it.

The tools you are going to need to install a backyard putting green are professional, and you are going to need to either rent or buy them.  While you will be able to dig up the area to be used with common shovels, you are not going to be able to adequately smooth and compact the underfill without a professional grading tool. You will need a tool that will be heavy enough to adequately compact the underfill in order to make it level and smooth, as well as making it able to provide a stable surface for the ball to roll across. We cannot stress enough that this step must be completed correctly or you will not be satisfied with the performance of the green. After this is accomplished you will roll out the artificial turf that you have chosen and stake it securely to the ground using the correct staking elements.  If you attempt to stake it using incorrect patterns or with inadequate materials, it will be loose and will continue to loosen over time.  This will also effect the way the ball rolls, and ultimately will make your experience less than pleasurable. Once the seams are joined and the turf is secured, drill the cup with a post hole digger and cut the turf with a blade.  Stake around the cup to prevent bagging in this area.
